X WHATARE IDENTITY CONCERNS? Identity can be defi ned in a number of ways. Th e term is often used to explain the distinguishing characteristics of a person, including their values and life experiences, but may also describe how a particular person, or group of people, compare in relation to others. For the purposes of this text, identity is viewed as how one defi nes the self not only at the individual level, but also in reference to others and to the surrounding world. It follows that identity concerns are those for which the client is struggling with any aspect of their personal characteristics or sense of self; these concerns may be wide and varied.
