ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a participatory model of communication that is able to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders as interrelated human actions on the environment converge to produce devastating results. It provides an understanding of why a holistic approach is necessary for a better ecological future. The chapter presents a conceptual framework for participatory environmental communication which is inclusive, values diversity and engenders agency in building resilience in vulnerable communities. Diversity is inclusive of non-human worlds, scientific and traditional knowledge, socio-cultural values and beliefs, demographic variables such as race, gender, age and (dis)abilities, to name a few. Networks in natural and social systems enable the exchange of information and resources between two or more entities, species or groups. Social networks are made up of nodes and relations: A network consists of nodes and links between those nodes. Communication has been the cornerstone of human relationship and the glue that binds network.
