ABSTRACT

Storytelling uses a dialogical approach and values the agency of subaltern groups. In this chapter, the author presents stories of the people she met in Fiji, Vanuatu and Kiribati, communities who are experiencing changes to their environment, and others working alongside these communities in adaptation and disaster response. In Kiribati, she learned about a family's concerns of an insecure future caused by coastal erosion which threatens their ancestral land and family home. In Fiji, the author listened to the story of a subsistence farmer whose livelihood has deteriorated with the onset of extreme weather events. In Vanuatu, she learned about the importance of communication and collaboration in the face of natural disasters. From these stories, she discovered the indomitable spirit and perseverance of both citizens and governments in Pacific island countries striving to build resilient societies from the ground up in the face of a changing reality.
