ABSTRACT

The conversion of non-audio data to sound and the way in which it can be used in sound art. Sonification refers to the acoustic representation of data. Sonification is a choice made by the sound artist. The idea of deriving written music from scientific data is not new. The most readily adaptable data types for sonification are those that are organized over time, like sound. Biological sonification refers to the transformation of data from living organisms into an audio record. Any living thing can be a source from the growth of bacteria to the chemical health of trees. A sonification project often begins with the availability of data and a method for extracting sound from the information. The artist may be more interested in the result rather than in the method and data from which the sound is derived. Russian sound artist Dimitry Morozov is a Moscow-based instrument builder who works with synthesizers and sound creation.
