ABSTRACT

A good example of putting assistive technology into practice was an exhibit by Scottish landscape painter, Keith Salmon, who is legally blind. Trained as a fine artist, Salmon has had to adapt his style over the years as his vision has diminished. As a means of conveying his work to an audience that would also include visually and hearing-impaired people, he engaged an array of assistive technologies for interpreting the paintings. In front of each work of art, a 3D space is linked to a number of soundtracks that are activated by the proximity of visitors. At a distance, one hears sounds such as environment depicted in the painting. Moving closer to the work triggers additional sounds, first are tones associated with the colors used by the artist and finally are the physical sounds of the artist working with pastels on paper.
