ABSTRACT

Technologies for capturing, recording, playing, and manipulating sound that are frequently used in sound art. The playback of recorded sound is at the center of much sound art. It is what allows an exhibit to standalone, unattended, naked to the world, without explanation or apology. The sound artist is often among the first to find fresh applications of playback technologies. The development of technology for recording and playing back sound has as its objective the faithful reproduction of the audio experience. Digital recording and playback have added significantly to the ways that recorded sounds can be used in art, adding immensely to the reach of the sound artist when it comes to the creation, editing, distribution, and assignment of sound to a project. An early example came in 1954 shortly after the availability of magnetic tape recording and the pioneering sound sculptures of Nicolas Schoffer.
