ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the potential for projecting sound into a given space and taking advantage of site-specific acoustical properties. Music has an existing form and structure that is independent of the place in which it will be performed. The principles just discussed have been on the mind of almost every sound artist. An appreciation of the acoustic space and its possibilities greatly influence the approach, materials, and audio sources that an artist will use. Any outdoor space intended for a work of sound art has its own set of challenges. Creating a sound work for the out of doors, especially if it is intended to be a permanent installation, is one of the most difficult to execute. Meta Diva incorporates 30 individual sound units, powered by solar energy. Each of the 30 units stands about 12 feet tall (3.5 meters) and clustered to resemble a bed of Lotus plants, adding to their environmentally friendly signature.
