ABSTRACT

This chapter explores neoliberal theories of the market, the state, and the human, as well as their critical consequences. Specifically, this chapter examines neoliberal ideas of spontaneous market order, privatization, personal responsibility, human capital, and self-appreciating individualism. It also examines the critical consequences of neoliberal theories—the four Ds. These include the following: (1) dispossession (the accumulation of wealth through stealing vital resources from people); (2) disimagination (the destruction of collective capacities for critique and radical thinking); (3) de-democratization (the undoing of democratic ideals, institutions, and desires); and (4) disposability (the relegation of individuals and populations who cannot contribute to the market to social death).
