ABSTRACT
This chapter describes particular areas of the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) role or address particular issues or challenges. It provides an overview of its contents to facilitate the speedy location of information and guidance. The chapter contains action points to allow SENCOs to ensure they have not omitted any aspects of their responsibilities. A child or young person has special educational needs if he/she has a learning difficulty or disability that calls for special educational provision to be made for him/her. The chapter focuses on young people aged 16 and over, they will be described as young people and/or students rather than children and/or pupils. It is mandatory for mainstream primary and secondary schools to appoint a SENCO and for this staff member to be a qualified teacher. In some schools, this role is combined with that of headteacher, subject or class teacher.
