ABSTRACT

This study text is for undergraduate-level sport-related degree programmes and centres on the governance of, and by, Non-Profit Sports Organisations (NPSOs) at an international, national and local level. Governance can be defined as ‘the process of granting power, verifying performance, managing, leading and/or administrating within an organization’ (O'Boyle, 2013: 1). In this sense governance is both political and administrative, and both aspects are addressed in this text. It may be timely for the sports student to engage with sport governance as it has experienced significant change in the last decade, including increasing professionalisation, commercialisation, political intervention and administrative upheaval. This complex context presents graduates with significant challenges in the operation of NPSOs, pertaining to regulation, stakeholding, performance, ethical practice and compliance. These challenges can be located in a context of administrative reform or a ‘modernisation’ of the sport sector.
