ABSTRACT

At the completion of this chapter, students should be able to:

identify the similarities and differences between corporate and non-profit governance;

account for the characteristics of non-profit sport organisations;

describe and explain different theoretical approaches and models for understanding sport governance;

explain different understandings of ‘autonomy’ and how each relates to sport governance;

decide which theoretical approaches or models possess utility for understanding sport governance for specific sports and in specific countries or geographical regions;

critically assess the value of theory for practice by NPSOs.
