ABSTRACT

One of my great pleasures before the start of a new school year, the start of a new

week, or indeed, the start of each day, was to prepare myself, and my classroom,

in readiness for my students. It has been my experience that time spent on careful

preparation – of lesson content, resources needed and the physical surroundings –

is time well spent. Having taken claim to be a joyfully literate adult in the lives of my

students, I wanted them to know that they were part of ‘the team’, a joyfully literate

community, where we all learn more about reading, writing and talking.
