ABSTRACT

If we are to make sense of what is around us, we need to be able to notice. Notice,

wonder and be able to record. When we record what we notice, the significance of

what is around us becomes more evident. The dictionary defines ‘significant’ as

‘suggesting a deeper meaning’. I am not suggesting that there is something deep

and meaningful in everything ordinary, just as I am not suggesting that we record

every waking moment of our lives, but it is this aspect of being human, of being

able to see significance, make connections, and thus make sense of our world, that

separates us from other living things. With practice, we can all become proactive

observers –

How can a tree

Wear crimson and orange

Together

And get away with it?
