ABSTRACT

Allegations of news bias are among the enduring issues in the study of political news. This chapter examines and defines political news bias, exploring its contours in the wide-open contemporary news environment, with information disseminated via ideological websites and Facebook. The chapter explores the popular thesis that news conveys a liberal bias, as well as concerns about gender biases in campaign coverage. Bringing scholarly research to bear, it separates out myths from realities in news bias and emphasizes the important role political journalism plays in democracy by uncovering and disseminating factual information about American politics.
