Ourcuriosityisnatural;thepersonalityoftheartistmayprovide illuminationorasenseofthestruggleofthehumanspiritinthe processofcreation.Gaskellknewthatcuriosity,thoughherreaders' interestinheridentityshedismissedasmereidleness.Inanotetoher publisher,Chapman,intheDecemberafterMaryBarton'sappearance,shecommentedwithasperityonattemptstoprobeher anonymity:
