ABSTRACT

This chapter helps teachers make connections with children about how materialism, classism, and commercialism keep them separated from each other as human beings with worth that is not related to what they wear, how they look, or what they own. Children could have the opportunity to think critically about the "Thanksgiving Story" and about the images that promote stereotypes and derogatory images. If teachers take a look at the classroom materials catalogues for early childhood education, they will typically find one set of materials designed for teaching children about jobs. Mississippi Low Income Child Care Initiative (MLICCI) organization grows advocacy and activism around the importance of state and federal subsidy and support for child care. The chapter presents an activity for the classroom that helps children think about one of the topics: valuing all kinds of work and workers; clothing, toys, housing, transportation; or reduce, reuse, recycle.
