ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the work of English teachers in the project schools, focusing on developing and applying a 4 × 4 metalanguage framework to support students to understand how Narrative genres work. In the first section, I present a foundational toolkit we designed with upper primary teachers to talk about how adventure Narratives build story worlds and dramatic tension. Illustrative lesson sequences in early middle years classes demonstrate how the metalanguage informed teachers’ pedagogic practice. In the second section, I present extensions to the foundational toolkit to account for Narratives that are composed as drama scripts, and illustrate the modelling of textual resources in a further lesson sequence.
