ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I continue the focus with extended texts that I have described as analytically organised. The Factorial explanation is a particularly valuable genre for building knowledge in history, science and the social sciences in the middle years because it includes multiple causes, factors or reasons for why phenomena occur. As with the Compositional analysis genre described in Chapter 5, Factorial explanations provide a context for developing reasoning and for organising discipline topics and subtopics into extended text. This provides a pathway towards ‘essay’ assignments required across the senior curriculum areas.
