ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I continue the exploration of persuasive genres from Chapter 7. Building on the metalanguage introduced for Analytical exposition, the chapter focuses on the work of English teachers in supporting students to access and deconstruct civic genres. In addition to SFL’s interpersonal resources of appraisal, the 4 × 4 toolkit designed for this domain was informed by contemporary and traditional rhetorical theories. In particular, I report on how SFL’s discourse semantic and grammatical resources were marshalled by teachers in our project schools to enact appeals to pathos, ethos and logos.
