ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book illustrates the process by which critical spaces are realized for learner and teacher alike. It presents a story about teachers, learners and scholar activists who struggle to define "peace" praxis. The book explores the theories and research related to critical peace education and global citizenship. It addresses the "compromises" on curriculum where students are now exposed to more diverse curriculum under the guise of the common core benchmarks. The book highlights the work of a middle school teacher that engages their students in powerful conversations about the cyclical nature of violence in our societies. It explores the story of educator's life journey of teaching peace in the late 1960s to the current day. The book also highlights freshman seminar that included a very diverse group of students from different parts of the world.
