ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the journey of a teacher activist, from the beginnings in his English classroom, to building a grassroots social movement around human rights to life-long contributions to the LGBT community. The teacher activist has positioned himself in unique ways to become accessible to student inquiry and explorations about the difficult questions. The chapter provides the case study illustrates well how powerful conversations and ideological confrontation can take place in unofficial curriculums that further develop into localized student run peace activist movements. Transformation in the classroom takes place when the educator possesses the identity of a teacher activist. As a teacher activist in a classroom with learner activists, powerful dialogues and actions can take place for conscientization, humanization and transformation. The journey of a teacher activist is oftentimes illuminated by setbacks and challenges and these experiences can embolden teachers to continue forth and develop greater initiatives.
