ABSTRACT

The learning goal for an SLO should be based on high-level knowledge and skills, often referred to as a “big idea” of the discipline, and should embody several key content standards. In developing the SLO we ask, “What do I want my students to know?” An appropriate SLO learning goal requires the development of a description of a “big idea” that synthesizes critical content and skills from state standards and district curriculum, specifies appropriate instructional strategies, identifies the necessary time span to teach the SLO learning goal, and indicates how the learning goal will be measured in real-world contexts.
