ABSTRACT

The newer cognitive-behavioral approaches are called contemporary or third wave approaches. The first and second wave approaches were briefly described in Chapter 1 and they will be noted throughout the rest of this book. They are still very much alive and being practiced throughout the world. However, this chapter and subsequent chapters will emphasize the third wave approaches. Why? Because these newer approaches are highly compatible with the core values, ideals, and practices of the counseling profession; these newer cognitive-behavioral approaches are a natural “fit” with the way many, if not most, counselors think and practice. Overall, these contemporary approaches emphasize the importance of developing and maintaining a strong therapeutic relationship, building on strengths, fostering mutual collaboration, and respecting individual and cultural differences. This chapter describes eight of these third wave approaches. They are: Strengths-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Pattern-Focused Therapy. Each approach is described in terms of theory and practice. A case example illustrates its application in counseling practice. Then key references are provided for further details and applications.
