ABSTRACT

Multicultural awareness and sensitivity are significant values in the counseling profession today. Cultural sensitivity is just as important in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) practice. Because counselors are expected to demonstrate sensitivity to diversity and cultural issues, the effective implementation of CBT interventions not only expects such sensitivity, but requires it. This chapter begins with a case vignette, which will be referenced throughout the chapter to illustrate various concepts about diversity issues in CBT practice. Then Culturally Responsive CBT (CR-CBT) will be highlighted and diversity in CBT practice will be discussed, followed by a review of CBT implications among several minority populations. Finally, assessment of cultural factors and cultural case conceptualization are emphasized through an extensive case example, as well as culturally responsive cognitive and behavioral interventions.
