ABSTRACT

While the simple bivariate analysis presented till now gives an idea of how the major states differ from each other and provides some clues on what factors need to be looked into further, the strength of each of these indicators and how they affect the health outcomes can be better understood through a multivariate analysis. Some simple multivariate analysis was conducted at the state, district and household levels to understand how significant these factors remain. Table 5.1 puts together the correlation coefficients for the relation between the indicators of influencing factors as seen in previous chapters with the health outcomes. Both female literacy and public health spending have very high correlations with the IMR and U5MR in a state. Indicators of economic conditions are also correlated with these health outcomes, but the coefficients are lower. While the details of each of the models, variables used and tables showing the results are available in Appendix A, here I just discuss the main findings.
