ABSTRACT
While the analysis presented until now across Indian states makes it clear that there is wide regional variation in human development outcomes and that women’s status and public services are important factors explaining this variation, the case study of two states provides insights on the processes through which these different factors interact with each other. From this chapter onwards, this book focusses on two states – Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
