ABSTRACT

In this chapter, coaching, an important component of performance management, is discussed from two perspectives. The first perspective, the manager as coach, provides managers with a definition of coaching, ideas for when to use coaching, how to avoid typical coaching mistakes, and a detailed coaching process (5S Coaching) with specific action steps to follow, enabling managers to be as effective as possible in their coaching role. The second perspective presents an overview of the use and role of professional internal and external coaches. Discussed are the objectives of professional coaching, what happens during professional coaching, how to choose the right coach, the value of internal versus external coaches, and the obstacles to and benefits of professional coaching. The effectiveness of coaching is evaluated based on recent research findings.
