ABSTRACT
Nestled in the middle Huang valley in present-day west Henan is the Yi-Luo basin, an elongated alluvial plain of 3,600 square km, named after the two eponymous rivers flowing from west to east. This narrow stretch of land was home to one of the great urban areas in Chinese history – Luoyang, “north of the Luo River.” 1
