ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of the 'wicked problems' approach in design thinking. It discusses the stages of the design thinking process: inspiration, ideation, and implementation. Design thinking has moved design upstream and has achieved a higher, and its rightful, place in the corporate world. One particular design firm that has been instrumental in achieving a higher status for design thinking is IDEO. A reflection on what the recent focus on design thinking has contributed to the understanding of design, and how it has informed design management, will enable to understand design thinking better. Design thinking has liberated design activities from being 'pigeon-holed' within the product development realm, to be applied to a plethora of organisational and strategic problems. Transformation design is about having a systems perspective applied to the design of wicked problems and social challenges.
