ABSTRACT

The differences among generations are not only reflected in behaviors, attitudes toward life, and morality but also in values, a field of deep awareness. The phenomenon of “cultural generation layers” is reflected in every aspect of social life, which was summarized by the cultural anthropologist, M. Mead. Modern societies do not follow the one-way straight-line succession as in traditional societies; therefore, the differences among generations become more obvious. Facing such a diverse and complex world, the older generation, compared to the younger generations, faces more difficulties in adapting to the new values and adopting the new behaviors due to their existing social experiences and fixed mindset. Intergenerational communication is reflected in three forms, including family communication, peer communication, and social communication. The modernization of China has a long way to go, which requires different generations to seek common ground while reserving differences and to utilize their own strengths.
