ABSTRACT

The secularization movement since the Middle Ages paved a way which kept religion and government separate worldwide; however, China went in the opposite direction during the Cultural Revolution. The results of our study in this chapter revealed that the different historical backgrounds led to different daily life values among generations. The ways in which people spent their leisure time reflected the changes in lifestyles and generational differences. Due to the open policy and social transformation, people now have more leisure time pursuits to make the content of life more colorful. People’s consumption values varied among different age groups. The proportions of people in the first and second age groups who agreed with the contemporary lifestyle of knowing how to earn money and how to spend were much higher than the proportions of people in the third and fourth age groups, and the fourth age group presented the lowest percentage. Marriage and dating values are important components of family life values. Marriage stability is the basis of a family, and love is the basis of a marriage; therefore, people’s perceptions of marriage, dating, and divorce have changed in recent years and varied among different age groups.
