ABSTRACT

Due to the different life experience of social members, their cultural values also vary. The goal of life is the most basic value concept and a primary factor to motivate people to work hard. People over the age of 50 mostly aimed to work for the benefit of society, while people under the age of 50 ranked “living according to my own wishes” as the first goal of life. This difference indicates weakened social responsibilities of people, who placed a greater emphasis on personal desire and self-development. People’s opinions on the main factors of success usually reflect their attitudes towards life and society. Personal success factors are generally divided into four aspects: opportunity, ability, effort, and education. People’s preferences for different factors are shown in the results reported in this chapter. The degree of acknowledgement of traditional culture reflects the extent to which the social members’ values match with mainstream culture. It also reflects people’s spiritual and value orientations in contemporary society. The views of traditional culture vary among different generations due to their different social experiences. This chapter presents detailed results of the research on this topic as well.
