ABSTRACT

The final chapter of the book covers the ascension of the PRC’s Fifth Generation of leaders headed by Xi Jinping, carrying the story up to 2017. It examines how Xi quickly accumulated more power than either of his two immediate predecessors, his promotion of the so-called Chinese Dream, and the continuing problems of corruption. The chapter examines the campaign against Western ideas epitomized by Document No. 9, which is discussed in detail. It also analyzes China’s state capitalist economic system, which the CCP prefers to call “socialism with Chinese characteristics” despite the fact that it has entirely dismantled China’s socialist economy. The challenge China’s manufacturing and export-oriented state-capitalist economy poses to other manufacturing countries, including the United States, is discussed. Finally, the chapter examines Xi’s assertive foreign policy and the challenge it poses to China’s neighbors and the United States.
