ABSTRACT

As you prepare any of these print materials, you should rely on the health and safety communications model described in Chapter 1. This foundational work is critical to the quality and ultimate success of your materials development. In short, you need to be clear what you want from the reader of your materials-what is it, specifically, that you want them to know, feel or do? You will want to think clearly about what content you want included. That is, to get the reader to the desired endpoint, specify the key content elements that are necessary to achieve this result. A follow-on planning activity is to determine what types of materials or approaches will be helpful in getting your audience to this desired endpoint. This is where you review the general and specific tools from previous chapters-will you want statistics? Testimonials? Graphics? Pictures? References? This gives you an overall framework from which to work. As you start to generate the specific design, whether for a brochure, flier, poster, booklet or other print material, you will want to be checking with others (such as members of the target audience) to gather their reactions to what you are planning and how you are designing it. You may show them several choices, to gather their input and suggestions. This formative process is helpful in ensuring that you are on the right track. With this background, attention to specific approaches will be addressed in the following chapter sections. These various sections that follow provide guidance about ways of preparing the different kinds of materials.
