ABSTRACT

There are two broad ways in which Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is integrated within the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) programme: through a teaching process, which is informed throughout by an underpinning understanding of the ways in which depressive relapse is triggered and maintained; and, through inclusion of curriculum elements drawn from CBT. This chapter provides a brief outline of these curriculum elements under the headings of the week in which they happen. The primary intention of this exercise is to facilitate an understanding that one's emotions are consequences of a situation plus an interpretation. Week 7 acts as a gathering point for integrating newly learnt skills of pausing and discerning what is arising in the present moment, with some action-oriented CBT strategies for working with depression. The intention is to ensure that MBCT participants gain the benefit of learning these evidence-based strategies for taking action in particular ways when depression threatens.
