ABSTRACT

A distinctive learning environment is cultivated within the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) course. The aspects of this that are particularly highlighted are the theme of intentionality, the style of relational process between participants and teacher, the experiential learning process, and the group context within which the learning takes place. In order to set the stage for this particular form of learning, a certain sort of intention needs to be cultivated. Sustaining a commitment to a regular mindfulness practice requires a strong degree of determination and motivation. Mindfulness is the awareness that emerges through paying attention to experience in a particular way: on purpose; in the present moment; and non-judgementally. The experiential learning involves developing ability to intuitively sense felt experience within the body and to trust the validity of what is sensed. The group aspect to teaching and participating in an MBCT class is a significant and potent part of the experience.
