ABSTRACT

An examination of labor division between men and women throughout Chinese history with an emphasis on (1) women’s economic contributions to the state and the family; (2) women’s professions outside of the home; (3) women who took lowly jobs; and (4) female factory workers in modern China. In addition, this chapter explores how women’s everyday experiences, such as their attire, living space, food, travel, and leisure, reflected the Chinese gender system of the time.
