19.1.1 In some of its uses, the Portuguese infinitive is equivalent to the English infinitive with or without ‘to’, as in ‘I want to go’ or ‘I must go’. However, in many other uses, it translates the English -ing form as in ‘I prefer going by train’ or ‘before going to bed’, etc.
