ABSTRACT

Developing self-confidence in the performance can prove as physical as heaving dumb-bells in a weight room and its impact can be just as exhausting, but, ultimately, they must make the effort to both literally, and figuratively, 'walk tall' and talk with confidence. Churchill's stammer and lisp severely hampered his confidence in giving speeches. He went about conquering his neurotic fears by researching great orators; devising his own unique style and deviating from typical speech patterns that would see him stammer and stop. Students are more inclined to see their teacher in a more positive light with a smile. Implicitly, explanations can become more interesting and feedback more valuable. Gesture has long since been studied for its social power. It is an irony for many teachers that they spend much of their working lives speaking to large groups of students, but the notion of speaking to a large group of their colleagues fills them with fear and loathing.
