ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some general considerations involved in managing classrooms. These include research-based practices, the student role, appropriate teacher attitudes, teacher modeling of positive behavior, and a conceptual framework for good management in contemporary classrooms. The chapter provides that rules and regulations in the form of classroom management will work effectively only after teachers understand their role and student needs and build positive and working relationships with all students. The classroom learning environment develops gradually in response to the teacher's communication of expectations, modeling of behavior, and approach to management. People in general and children in particular learn many things by observing models, including attitudes, values, problem-solving strategies, and social behavior. Just as teachers model their interests in their students and the content they teach they should also model their interests in parents and others. Expressing teachers positive interest in parents and their child in the year can pay off in the rare instances where discipline problems develop.
