ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a broad overview of the general level of school safety in order to give readers an understanding of the extent to which serious misbehavior occurs in schools. It deals systematically with what classroom teachers can do to correct misbehavior. H. Jerome Freiberg combined classroom management research with person-centered principles to create the Consistency Management and Cooperative Discipline Program. The chapter focuses on some school-wide programs designed to address student conflict and misbehavior. It discusses the fact that some students face more adversity than do others, for example, LBGTQ youth and the homeless. The chapter suggests how teachers may make schools more supportive for them and for all students. The higher-rated teachers from the Classroom Strategy Study also recommended helping the students learn to monitor and control their attention more successfully. The most effective form of strategy teaching is likely to be modeling combined with verbalized self-instructions, because this demonstrates the process directly for students.
