ABSTRACT

Hilary and I arrived in Stanford, California, in September 2001, having the good fortune to be supported by a fellowship from the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences, an independent institution with close links to Stanford University. Stanford is a world-class university, founded by Leland Stanford who made a fortune from railroad development in the 19th century, locating it on land surrounding his stud farm around 20 miles south of San Francisco. It was co-educational, had no religious affiliation and has been extremely successful, producing multiple Nobel Prize winners and more recently forming the hub of Silicon Valley with its graduates and sometimes its dropouts being responsible for many of the multinational information technology firms that have come to dominate the world.
