ABSTRACT

I had been at the Applied Psychology Unit for around seven years. I was enjoying life at the Unit, but I had always assumed that at some point I would move over to a university post and if so, given my lack of teaching experience, it might be sensible to move sooner rather than later. The mid-sixties was a good time to move as the university system had greatly expanded following the foundation of six or seven new universities, almost all of which had psychology departments. Furthermore, departments were getting larger with more emphasis on research, breaking away from the old system of one professor per department who was then doomed to spend the rest of his or her career in administration.
