ABSTRACT

The Jin and the Southern and Northern dynasties was one of the most turbulent phases in Chinese history. Thirty years after the establishment of the Jin dynasty, the Upheaval of the Eight Princes broke out, followed by an invasion of the central plains from the northwest. The Han were forced to settle further south, and the war between the south and the north lasted for 300 years. The Southern and Northern dynasty saw the rapid development of military martial arts and significant ethnic hybridization of Chinese martial arts, such as the Han sabre being used by the Xiongnu and the skills of Xiongnu horseback archery being learned by the Han. Notably, Chinese Buddhism and Taoism arose in this period, infusing a more religious aspect into Chinese martial arts, and leading to the establishment of Shaolin Temple and the Taoism Sect.
