ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is devoted to the work of five modern thinkers who develop their own theories of political economy, at least in part, out of Aristotle's. It presents Aristotle's critique of political economy, including his Theory of Value. The book presents the theoretical grounds for advancing an Aristotelian Social Welfare Function (SWF). It argues that if the SWF for a country is increasing, then its economy is improving; and if the SWF is decreasing, the economy is declining. The book shows that gross domestic product per capita is not a reliable measure of economic growth. It presents Aristotle's theory of value, and explores his theory of reciprocal justice, that is how to achieve justice in a community in which citizen exchange goods with each other.
