ABSTRACT

South Dhofar has been a part of Oman since the last part of the nineteenth century although it has always had close connections with the Hadhramaut. It is something of a mystical province. Even while the war was still on, new buildings and improvements on the coastal plain flourished under an enthusiastic and imaginative Dhofar Development Board and now the good work can be continued up into the Jebel area, which until recently was largely enemy-held. In the last stages of the war, as areas became 'white' Civil Action Teams (CATs) moved in the behind the army. The final victory in Dhofar was brought about largely by a policy of establishing lines of posts controlling the routes through the wadis north of Mughsayl, thirty-five kilometres to the west of Salalah, to behind the Qara mountains.
