ABSTRACT
In this chapter a framework is developed for investigating the stimulus patterns represented in neural mechanisms. An analysis of linear model neurons is used to obtain the simplest description of the patterns represented by a neural mechanism and this approach is applied in the subsequent chapters to reveal the aspects of the stimulus which are being captured by the colour and spatial coding mechanisms.
