ABSTRACT
The chapter provides wider discussion of task-linked planning, following the two reprinted chapters on this topic. After describing the two studies very briefly and comparing them, in results and in methodology (quantitative and qualitative), the rest of the chapter is devoted to a review of general planning research. First, a range of quantitatively linked variables are covered (pre-task planning, proficiency level, on-line planning, instructions, and so on). Then qualitative research is reviewed, followed by a discussion of the importance of repetition as a form of preparedness. The chapter concludes by linking planning research to the Levelt model, and distinguishes between planning as it links to micro issues (e.g. within-clause processing) and macro issues (wider discourse and larger-scale planning).
