ABSTRACT

The author often go back to Cheltenham now and wander about the beautiful old roads. There were many faults in the Cheltenham of his day. People wore whatever clothes they liked and there was a lot of foolish emulation and endless discussion about frocks. Also there was a great deal of very undesirable conversation and too much discussion of lovers and love. The adoption of a plain simple uniform is a marked improvement and the school gymnastics and exercises have done good. He did a certain amount of what were called calisthenics but he was not very exhausting, unless a girl had need of special exercises. A certain amount of compulsory games may be an advantage, but in the author's humble opinion this is very much overdone, and the constant scurrying is bad for growing children. They never have a moment to themselves and the old delightful intimacies are not encouraged.
