ABSTRACT

The designer of an adaptive architecture is the original author who codes the thumbprint of the building. In the case of an adaptive architecture, the "set of things" that interconnect are building materials in conjunction with natural elements like light and air quality that can be perceived by occupants. The way in which these elements interconnect over time is what the author of design systems must be concerned with–as their resulting behaviors have consequences for those who experience that environment. By knowing where the leverage points are within an adaptive system, one can adjust system behavior to expand, evolve or change behavioral qualities. Balancing feedback loops help a complex and dynamic system to self-correct as it interacts with different triggers over time. Each of the design challenges calls for an adaptive architectural author that understands and can translate systems thinking through an architectural design.
